Make Steve's Music Center your first stop for guitar pedals.

What kind of guitar effects do you need?  Some people would say that you shouldn't need any at all. But even those purists usually have some kind of distortion or compression device in their collection.

It's really a matter of personal taste. And there's no right or wrong answer.

If you're just getting started, you might want to think about getting an inexpensive multi-effects pedal like the DigiTech RP150. Multi-effects pedals are great for getting a feel for what's out there. But for performance, most players prefer individual stompboxes because they require less fuss and bother on stage. A favorite among young players is the BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone Pedal and the Jim Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah.

Some players stop right there, but others graduate into individual boutique effects, like Fulltone, maker of one of my personal favorites, the Fulltone Full-Drive 2 Mosfet. Others go for rack-mounted multi-effects units, like the TC Electronic G Major .

Typical effects include Chorus, Compressor , Delay, Distortion, Equalization, Flanger, Harmonizer, Limiter, Noise GateOverdrive, Phaser, Rotating Speaker Simulator, Reverb, Tremolo, Vibrato, Volume Pedal , and Wah-Wah pedal.

The list of manufacturers changes every day, but here's a good sample of what's currently out there:
